High-pile wool rug

  • 100% wool with cotton backing
    • You may find traces of dried hay, grass, or straw in your rug as grazing sheep often collect plant matter in their coats. Remove gently by hand or with tweezers.
    • Authentic wool fibers were used to weave this rug. Please note that when wool gets damp, it will smell like a wet sheep. This is the scent of lanolin, which acts as a waxy barrier against dirt and moisture.
  • High pile (.6" or 15 mm thick)
  • Color palette: bone beige, smokey gray, dove gray, goldenrod yellow, mustard yellow, spiced pumpkin orange
  • As with all hand-knotted plush pile rugs, expect shedding in the first few months
  • The shedding quantity and duration varies by foot traffic and rug construction
  • Shedding is typical for most rugs for the first 6-9 months
  • Due to its handmade nature a 5% variance in size, color and texture is to be expected.

The Collection

Soft and simple contemporary rugs, the Ladder Collection is truly striking in person. Our design team played into the linear quality of the weave with simple border designs, allowing the yarn's colorful abrash to shine. Rugs with design details along their kilim or selvedge edges (the long sides, not the top and bottom) are perfect for dining rooms, because if you put a table in the middle, the edge detail still shines. Woven with a hand-tufting technique which creates distinct horizontal lines, these rugs are inspired by Roland Fischer's photo series 'Facades', which studies the graphic patterns that emerge on the front of skyscrapers when viewed closely.

The Design

These pieces have a dappled off-white field bordered by simple linework on the long edges. Joist has a striped center and solid borders with thicker, shorter lines which add a sense of movement.

The Material

Wool is a stalwart rug fiber, and has been since the first weavers. Warm, soft, and strong, it has a hydrophobic layer which repels dust and dirt, as well as lanolin, which provides its trademark luster and protects the fiber from breaking or shedding. In this piece, it's hand-tufted onto a cotton foundation for durability.

The Maker

Our Good Weave-certified partner began 15 years ago in Mirzapur, India. Prizing honesty, transparency, and ethical practices, they're passionate about the rugs they create, guaranteeing high quality and innovation.

The Designer

Our in-house, all-star design team collaborates across three different countries. Based in Los Angeles, Istanbul, and Mumbai, they put a lot of thought into each and every collection they design. Starting with the weave itself, they determine material and technique, then create moodboards to capture the look and feel before starting to design. When designs are finalized, they conduct an extensive sampling process, perfecting each style and color before it goes to production.

  • Clean on low power with a non-rotary vacuum or suction attachment (no spinning brush) only.
  • Lightly vacuum the rug once a week
  • Use a high-quality rug pad to absorb shock and reduce damage to the pile
  • Rotate your rug on occasion to ensure even wear over time
  • Keep away from excessive moisture
  • Do not dry clean or steam clean
  • Due to the hand-crafted nature of our rugs, you can expect to see light shedding, matting, and signs of fiber and thread breakage over time. For high traffic areas, these effects may occur more quickly and easily.
  • Spot cleaning instructions:
    • Lightly dampen a paper towel or cloth with clean water
    • Gently blot the affected area with your damp towel or cloth to dilute the stain
    • If the stain persists, try using an unscented, citrus-free, clear soap to avoid bleaching the textile.
    • Repeat this process until the stain is removed

Washing Machine Size Requirements for Joist

Our rugs are compatible with most standard washing machines, but just to be safe, here are a few guidelines:

You do need a rug pad
Here's why

Why You Need a Rug Pad

While we recommend a rug pad for all rugs, they’re especially important for flatweaves, whose slim profile requires extra padding.

A rug pad prevents unwanted bunching and sliding, adds a subtle lift, and gives your rug a more cushioned feel underfoot.

Our rug pads are made of recycled felt and natural rubber, whereas lesser rug pads’ thin, sticky web can damage your flooring.

Moisture and mildew resistant, a rug pad stops dirt and grime from settling in your rug’s fibers.

The right rug pad

A must-have for flatweaves and other lower-pile pieces, a rug pad is the secret ingredient to maintaining your rug’s appearance and longevity. Width-wise, you’ll want to trim your rug pad so it’s 1-2” shorter than your rug on all four sides. Height-wise, we offer two premium rug pad options, both made of cozy recycled felt and natural rubber.
