The Recess Collection is inspired by wabi-sabi, which holds that nature is uncontrollable. It’s a law of nature that something, someday, will spill on your rug. So we designed a collection of machine-washable 100% organic cotton flatweaves, which are both light and durable. We called it Recess because they're made for playing, and it’s okay if you make a mess - you won’t get in trouble.
The DesignCotton dhurries are classic Indian flatwoven rugs, designed to be lightweight, portable, and cold in summer, warm in winter. Stripes are a standard dhurrie design, and ours are no exception. Holding is a light taupe rug with blue stripe accents at both ends.
The MaterialCotton is a vegetable fiber widely used across rug traditions because of its sturdiness and longevity. Organic cotton is even better: because no chemicals are used in its processing, its fibers are actually stronger, and will retain more durability over time. Organic cotton farmers use no pesticides, which keeps both workers and plants healthier. Farming organic cotton emits 46% less carbon dioxide than regular cotton, and requires 91% less water.
The MakerOur partner is a small, family-run operation devoted to maintaining the integrity of the yarn they use. Wherever possible they prioritize the use of organic materials, and are committed to a high level of quality and craftsmanship. We collaborated with them closely on this project, testing and refining the construction several times to make the cotton more flexible in the washing machine.
The DesignerOur in-house, all-star design team works across Los Angeles, Istanbul, and Mumbai. Starting with the weave itself, they determine the collection material, technique, and mood. When designs are finalized, they collaborate with the supplier on an extensive sampling process, perfecting each style and hue before it goes to production.
- When it's time for a deeper clean, machine wash your rug on delicate with 1 TBSP of gentle detergent. Line dry afterwards, and iron if you wish.
- For sizes 6x9 and above, we recommend using a 60-lb washing machine—the large kind you find at a laundromat—rather than a home washing machine, which is usually 20-25 lbs. Line dry afterwards.
- If your rug is heavily soiled, we suggest you dry clean it instead of wash.
- As with most non-synthetic textiles, natural fiber and color softening will occur after washing. We prefer this lived-in look, but if it's not your thing, we recommend dry cleaning.
- In case of spills, use a paper towel or cloth to blot the liquid. Add some clean water sparingly to the spot to dilute the stain (or wet a paper towel or cloth) and blot. If the stain is persistent, try using a mild detergent. Repeat this process until the stain is removed.
