A flexible, washable flatweave made of 100% organic cotton
- 100% organic cotton
- Handwoven flatweave (about 3-4mm thick)
- Color palette: pale sage gray, sage gray, mustard yellow
- Machine washable, hang dry. Please note may shrink 1-2 inches after washing.
- Rug pad highly recommended - for comfort, stability, and longevity
- Due to its handmade nature a 5% variance in size, color and texture is to be expected.
Care
+
- Vacuum on low power with a non-rotary (no spinning brush) vacuum or suction attachment only.
- When it's time for a deeper clean, machine wash your rug with like colors on a delicate setting with 1 TBSP of unscented, clear detergent.
- For sizes 6'x9' and above, we recommend using a 60-lb washing machine - the large kind you find at a laundromat - rather than a home washing machine, which is usually 20-25 lbs. Line dry afterwards.
- Be sure to wash rugs according to their recommended washing machine size capacity. Please note: failure to adhere to size recommendations could result in damage to your machine.
- A slight shrinkage of up to 5% can be expected for all washable rugs
- If your rug is heavily soiled, we suggest you dry clean it instead of wash.
- Due to the hand-crafted nature of our rugs, you can expect to see light shedding, matting, and signs of fiber and thread breakage over time. For high traffic areas, these effects may occur more quickly and easily.
- Spot cleaning instructions:
- Lightly dampen a paper towel or cloth with clean water
- Gently blot the affected area with your damp towel or cloth to dilute the stain
- If the stain persists, try using an unscented, citrus-free, clear soap to avoid bleaching the textile.
- Repeat this process until the stain is removed

The Collection
The Recess Collection is inspired by wabi-sabi, which holds that nature is uncontrollable. It's a law of nature that something, someday, will spill on your rug. So we designed a collection of machine-washable 100% organic cotton flatweaves, which are both light and durable. We called it Recess because they're made for playing, and it's okay if you make a mess - you won't get in trouble.
The Design
Cotton dhurries are classic Indian flatwoven rugs, designed to be lightweight and portable, cold in summer, warm in winter. Stripes are a standard dhurrie design, and ours are no exception. Leaping features a balanced circle at either end, like egg yolk suns, overlaid by stripes of varying width.
The Material
Cotton is a vegetable fiber widely used across rug traditions because of its sturdiness and longevity. Organic cotton is even better: because no chemicals are used in its processing, its fibers are actually stronger, and will retain more durability over time. Organic cotton farmers use no pesticides, which keeps both workers and plants healthier. Farming organic cotton emits 46% less carbon dioxide than regular cotton, and requires 91% less water.
The Maker
Our partner is a small, family-run operation devoted to maintaining the integrity of the yarn they use. Wherever possible they prioritize the use of organic materials, and are committed to a high level of quality and craftsmanship. We collaborated with them closely on this project, testing and refining the construction several times to make the cotton more flexible in the washing machine.
The Designer
Our in-house, all-star design team collaborates across three different countries. Based in Los Angeles, Istanbul, and Mumbai, they put a lot of thought into each and every collection they design. Starting with the weave itself, they determine material and technique, then create moodboards to capture the look and feel before starting to design. When designs are finalized, they conduct an extensive sampling process, perfecting each style and color before it goes to production.
